

Weekend Course - 5 weekends (Saturday and Sunday)
This course can only be taken by students who already hold the I.T.E.C. Anatomy, Physiology and Body Massage Diploma (or equivalent). The course takes place either over five full weekends or on ten individual weekdays at weekly or fortnightly intervals. Day time sessions begin at 9:30 a.m., and finish early in the evening. Upon successful completion, the I.T.E.C. Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy Level 4 will be awarded.
A knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology is essential and special emphasis is placed on the Skeletal, Muscular, Vascular and Neurological systems.
Specific massage techniques for sports injuries including remedial massage, soft tissue release, cross-friction massage and stretching massage movements.
Pre and post event sports massage. Treatment of injuries in the acute, post-acute and chronic phases. Use of ice and heat in treating injuries. Sports injury prevention techniques. Exercise as part of a treatment plan. Active, passive and resistive exercises. Isometric exercises. Stretching and its importance in maintaining fitness and regaining flexibility. Principles of training. Nutrition for sport.
Students who reach the required standard will be submitted for the I.T.E.C. Certificate examination. There will be a one hour multiple choice theory paper, a two hour written theory paper and the practical exam will consist of massage techniques for sports people with or without a sports injury and the demonstration to the examiner of any exercises which may be appropriate. Oral questions may be asked by the examiner. Students must submit treatment evidence forms covering a thorough initial assessment and including the various techniques learnt over the course. They must also submit an event learning log carried out at sporting events, and 6 short assignments covering various aspects of the course.
